BBC Rugby Union News: England Make Three Changes for Showdown with Ireland

    Published: 14:00 BST, 7 March 2024 | Updated: 14:48 BST, 7 March 2024

In a crucial Six Nations clash, the England national rugby union team has announced three changes to their starting lineup for the highly anticipated showdown with Grand Slam-chasing Ireland on Saturday.

Immanuel Feyi-Waboso, the 21-year-old Cardiff-born wing from Exeter, will make his first Test start, replacing veteran Elliot Daly. This promotion follows Feyi-Waboso’s try-scoring cameo in the previous defeat against Scotland at Murrayfield.

Head coach Steve Borthwick hailed the selection, stating, > “As always, we’ve selected what we think is our strongest 23 to leave us best placed to win the game. Ireland are without doubt currently one of the best teams in the world, and we’ll have to be at our very best against them on Saturday.”

Additionally, scrum-half Alex Mitchell has been chosen to start, with Danny Care dropping to the bench. This move means Care will have to wait to earn his 100th Test cap for England, an incredible milestone that Borthwick praised, saying, > “Danny has been a tremendous servant to English rugby, and reaching this milestone is an incredible achievement.”

The third change sees lock George Martin added to the starting lineup.

England’s team for the crunch match at Twickenham is as follows:

    Starting XV:

      1. George Furbank
      1. Immanuel Feyi-Waboso
      1. Henry Slade
      1. Ollie Lawrence
      1. Cadan Murley
      1. George Ford
      1. Alex Mitchell
      1. Ellis Genge
      1. Jamie George (captain)
      1. Kyle Sinckler
      1. Maro Itoje
      1. George Martin
      1. Ollie Chessum
      1. Jack Willis
      1. Billy Vunipola

    Replacements:

      1. Luke Cowan-Dickie
      1. Mako Vunipola
      1. Will Stuart
      1. Courtney Lawes
      1. Alex Dombrandt
      1. Danny Care
      1. Marcus Smith
      1. Elliot Daly

The highly anticipated clash between England and Ireland at Twickenham promises to be a thrilling affair, as both teams vie for a crucial Six Nations victory.
