Veteran Northampton Saints captain Courtney Lawes is vowing to leave everything on the pitch as he aims to guide his club to the Premiership final in his final match at Franklin’s Gardens. The 35-year-old England international, who made his Saints debut back in 2007, will depart the club this summer to join French side Brive.
Lawes, who hails from the local Duston area, is desperate to secure a place in next week’s Premiership final at Twickenham before bidding an emotional farewell to the Northampton faithful. “It’s mad that it has come round this quickly, but I think I can reflect on it post-game when the job is done,” he stated. “I want to go out there and enjoy it, go out there and do what I have always done, which is to run my blood to water and give it everything I have. I fully intend to do that.”
The hard-hitting lock forward is determined to ensure his storied Northampton career does not end in Friday’s play-off clash against Saracens. “I grew up round here, literally on these streets. It is a two-minute walk down the road to my mum’s house and Duston is where I hung out, apart from here,” Lawes explained. “Essentially, I am representing the people I grew up with, the places I grew up in and I don’t take that lightly. It’s been some ride.”
