Bath Triumph in Hard-Fought Playoff Victory Over Sale
Bath’s thrilling playoff victory over Sale Sharks was marred by an ugly incident at the final whistle as England and Lions lock Jonny Hill was involved in a confrontation with a Bath supporter. The 6ft7in forward, who has been sidelined since January due to a knee injury, was pulled away by Sale coach Byron McGuigan after putting the 28-year-old Bath fan in a headlock, leaving him with a split eye and broken glasses.
Despite the unsavory scenes, Bath’s hard-fought 21-18 win was a testament to their resilience and the tactical nous of head coach Johann van Graan. Flyhalf Finn Russell kicked 16 crucial points, including the conversion of Niall Annett’s late try, to secure Bath’s place in the Premiership final against Northampton on Saturday.
The Tight Affair
The tightly contested affair saw both teams struggle to find their finishing touch, with Bath’s desperate scramble defense, led by the impressive Ollie Lawrence, keeping Sale at bay. Ben Curry’s driving maul try and Tom O’Flaherty’s kick chase put the visitors ahead, but Bath responded through Beno Obano and Russell’s boot to seal a narrow victory.
“We came through an incredible amount of pressure today,” Van Graan said. “The vision I sold to everyone on July 11, 2022 was that I’d that respect out past, but we start from zero. We’ve gone from hoping as a club to believing we can win.”
While the ugly incident involving Jonny Hill overshadowed the match, Bath’s triumph was a significant milestone in their quest to end their Premiership trophy drought, which stretches back to 1996. With the likes of Russell and Obano leading the way, they will be brimming with confidence ahead of their showdown with Northampton.
