As the Welsh women’s rugby union team looks to halt their five-game losing streak, head coach Ioan Cunningham believes composure will be the key when they face Ireland in Cork on April 13th.
The upcoming Six Nations matchup at Musgrave Park, which will be broadcast live on BBC iPlayer and BBC Radio Wales/Cymru, presents an important opportunity for Wales to bounce back after their 46-10 defeat against England last weekend.
“Players are going deep to the well and giving everything for the shirt,” Cunningham said. “We are so proud of that effort. We just need to balance that up with being clinical and having that composure at the right time. Once that clicks, we will be a tough team to stop.”
Despite the loss to the reigning Six Nations champions, the Welsh coach was encouraged by his team’s performance, noting that they left “four or five tries out there” in the first half alone. Improving their decision-making and execution in the attacking 22 will be a focus as they prepare to take on an Irish side still seeking their first win of the tournament.
“It’s composure and calmness when we are in those areas, it’s confidence and belief as well,” Cunningham explained. “The occasion was fantastic, the atmosphere was brilliant, and it’s having that clarity when you are under that sort of pressure.”
With the Rugby World Cup qualifications on the line, Wales will be desperate to get their Six Nations campaign back on track against Ireland, whom they comprehensively defeated in last year’s tournament. However, Cunningham is under no illusions about the challenge that awaits them.
“Next week is a great opportunity to rest up and do some good review work into the England game,” he said. “There were positives we can take into Ireland, but they will represent a massive challenge.”
As Wales look to secure a top-three finish in this year’s Six Nations and qualify for the World Cup, maintaining their composure and clinical edge will be crucial when they take on Ireland in the rugby union gameplay on April 13th.
