Rugby union enthusiasts were captivated amidst the drama in Bristol during the 2024 Women’s Six Nations Championship, as Megan Jones, a native of Cardiff, displayed a commanding performance against Wales.
Wearing the white of England, Jones, who is both Welsh-born and bilingual, orchestrated a charged display of gameplay, taking advantage of the absence of Helena Rowland to lead England to another dominant victory over their close neighbors, having already achieved a comfortable win against Italy in the opening round.
Though England did not consistently demonstrate their top-tier capabilities, their offering was still more than enough to leave Wales reeling. Crossing the white line on eight occasions, a majority of which occurred during each half, England showcased their powerful potential. A perfect example of the gap between the two sides materialized as Wales came close to a try just before halftime. Overthrowing possession to initiate a counter-attack, Jones rocketed from her own 22, handing a perfect platform for Hannah Botterman’s close-range effort, effectively widening England’s lead. Though England can take pride in their well-executed offensive strategies, they still faced obstacles as Natasha Hunt was penalized for distributing the ball too slowly at a ruck under new World Rugby refereeing guidelines.
Mirroring the continuing growth evident in the women’s game in England, a record-breaking attendance of 19,705 attended the event at Ashton Gate, demonstrating curiosity and increased fan interest.
Keira Bevan was able to secure a try for Wales, originating from a swift tap penalty, but it was home-team England that claimed victory, with Holly Aitchison kicking three of eight conversions and lock Rosie Galligan converting a brace, ultimately granting them an impressive 59-5 win over Wales.
