Scarlets Legend Jonathan Davies Honored with Testimonial Year

Iconic Center Faces Uncertain Future as Contract Expires

Scarlets’ iconic center, Jonathan Davies, fondly known as ‘Foxy,’ has been honored with a testimonial year by his long-standing club, running from June 2024 to May 2025 (BBC Rugby Union, date). However, there is growing curiosity surrounding the future of the 36-year-old in the Llanelli jersey, as his contract is set to expire at the season’s end, without any announcements of renewal.

Over the years, the Welsh and British & Irish Lions star has amassed 209 appearances for Scarlets, which began when he made his professional debut against Northampton at the tender age of 18 (BBC Rugby Union, date). Born in St. Clears, Davies carved his path through the junior ranks of Whitland, eventually becoming a prominent figure of the Scarlets academy and solidifying his spot as a leading center in global rugby union.

    International Accolades and Achievements

Davies’ international career includes representing Wales in 96 Tests and captaining the side on four separate occasions. Boasting an impressive track record, he has secured two Grand Slam victories in the Six Nations Championship, ensured two Six Nations championship wins for his nation, and participated in two Rugby World Cups. The center’s prestigious Lions voyage resulted in six Test appearances during the 2013 Australia and 2017 New Zealand tours, the latter resulting in him being bestowed with the honor of player of the series in the 1-1 draw against the All Blacks.

Scarlets’ Storied Tenure and Cherished Memories

Jonathan Davies’ storied tenure with his local club has been marked by a return from a two-year stint with Clermont Auvergge in France. Serving as a pivotal piece of Scarlets’ triumph in the 2016-17 league, he reflected on his career saying, “As a child, I never dreamed I’d transition from chasing autographs from Scarlets players after games at Stradey Park to actually becoming a player and representing the club more than 200 times.” Among the host of fond memories, Davies fondly remembers winning the league in 2016-17 alongside teammates who “were not just colleagues, but also friends.”

“As a child, I never dreamed I’d transition from chasing autographs from Scarlets players after games at Stradey Park to actually becoming a player and representing the club more than 200 times.”

    Testimonial Year and Charity Support

A series of events have been organized to commemorate Davies’ illustrious career with Scarlets, while also supporting his chosen charity, LATCH. Scarlets’ chairman, Simon Muderack, offered high praise for Davies as the club “wishes Jon great success during his testimonial year. He’s a player who has had a significant impact on the game, a proud west Walian, and is widely regarded as one of the greatest centers in world rugby union.”
