Wales Struggle to Find Answers as Six Nations Campaign Falters

The Welsh women’s rugby union team finds themselves in a precarious position in the ongoing Women’s Six Nations championship. After defeats against Scotland, England, and Ireland, they now sit at the bottom of the table, facing the prospect of a dismal finish to their campaign.

In a candid admission, Wales captain Hannah Jones acknowledged that her team “didn’t turn up” in their recent loss to Ireland. This defeat, coupled with the team’s earlier struggles, has raised questions about their ability to handle the pressure that came with last season’s success, which saw them finish third in the inaugural WXV1 tournament.

“Former Wales internationals have weighed in on the team’s plight, with Philippa Tuttiett highlighting the “killer blow” of conceding a try shortly after halftime against Ireland, which she believes “rings alarm bells.” Elinor Snowsill, another ex-Wales fly-half, emphasizes the need for the Welsh Rugby Union to continue its work on the domestic league, as the team’s journey towards improvement has not been a straight line.”

Centre Elen Evans echoes the sentiment, noting that the team is “struggling to cope with the pressure” and that their energy and desire to win have been lacking. She suggests that the team needs to “get confidence going” against France and “find something inside them” to salvage their campaign.

The upcoming matches against France and Italy present both a daunting challenge and a crucial opportunity for the Welsh side. As they face the world’s third-ranked team, France, at Cardiff Arms Park and then take on Italy at the Principality Stadium, the team must find a way to rediscover the form that saw them reach the heights of the WXV1 last year.

With the team’s place in the top six of the world rankings on the line, the coming weeks will be a true test of the Welsh rugby union side’s resilience and character. As they strive to bounce back, the support and resilience of their fans will be crucial in this crucial phase of their journey.
