Welsh Prop Carre Leaves Wales Squad, Returns to Saracens

In a significant move, the Welsh Rugby Union recently announced that prop Rhys Carre has been released from the national team setup, citing his failure to meet “individual performance targets.” Despite some impressive displays for his club side Cardiff, the former Wales Under-18 captain was omitted from the national squad for the 2022 autumn internationals, with then-coach Wayne Pivac stating that Carre had “fallen short” in his “general conditioning.”

Carre, who was part of Wales’ 2019 World Cup squad, has now decided to return to Premiership club Saracens, a move that will make him ineligible for Wales next season due to the WRU’s 25-cap rule. Reflecting on the decision, the Cardiff-born player acknowledged that “some things aren’t meant to be” and that he feels the time is right for a “new start” and a chance to “better myself again.”

Acknowledging the challenges he has faced since the 2019 World Cup, where he made his senior international debut, Carre expressed a desire to “go away and get out of the environment” and see where he can take his career. The switch to London will provide the opportunity for Carre to reignite his ambitions, as he looks to regain the form that earned him a place in Wales’ World Cup squad just a few years ago.

With the Wales national rugby union team and the upcoming Rugby World Cup final among the key topics covered, this article offers valuable insights into the ever-evolving landscape of international rugby union competition.
