Legendary Welsh Rugby Player Jonathan Davies Announces Retirement
Legendary Welsh rugby union player Jonathan Davies has announced his retirement from the sport, bringing an end to a remarkable career that spanned over two decades. Affectionately known as ‘Foxy’, Davies played his junior club rugby for St Clears and Whitland before coming through the Scarlets academy and establishing himself as one of the leading centres in world rugby.
Davies’ international career was nothing short of illustrious, representing the British and Irish Lions on six occasions across two tours in 2013 and 2017. He was named the player of the series in the 1-1 draw against the All Blacks in 2017, a testament to his world-class abilities. At the national level, Davies has earned an impressive 96 caps for Wales, captaining his country on four separate occasions. He was a key figure in two Grand Slam-winning sides and enjoyed a further two Six Nations Championship triumphs, while also featuring in two Rugby World Cup tournaments.
Alongside his celebrated international career, Davies enjoyed two spells with the Scarlets, with a two-year stint at Clermont Auvergne in between. He played a pivotal role in the Scarlets’ league success in the 2016-17 season, a period he described as “one of the most enjoyable moments of his illustrious career.” He said, “The rugby we played was so much fun and natural. It felt as if we were operating at our highest level possible and the talent in that group was so high.”
Davies shared a special moment with his brother James, who recently retired from the sport due to concussion, after the Scarlets’ Pro12 final victory in 2017. He added, “Playing alongside my brother was another special moment and winning a trophy in the same side as him is something I am very proud of.”
As the Scarlets prepare for their final home match of the season against Ulster on May 11, Davies and several other high-profile players, including hooker Ken Owens, who has announced his retirement, will be bidding farewell to the club.
