Wales to Host WXV Play-off Match Against Spain
In a crucial Rugby Union showdown, the Wales national team will host their WXV play-off match against Spain at the iconic Cardiff Arms Park on June 29th. The winner of this high-stakes encounter will secure a spot in the WXV2 tournament in South Africa this September, while the losing side will head to Dubai to compete in the WXV3 event.
During this year’s Six Nations championship, Wales managed to attract record crowds at the Arms Park, despite suffering two defeats that left them at the bottom of the table. Conversely, Spain qualified for the play-off as the victors of the Rugby Europe Women’s Championship.
“Victory against Italy provides us with a platform to build on with the 2025 World Cup in England still very much the focus,” – Ioan Cunningham, Wales head coach
Wales head coach Ioan Cunningham emphasized the significance of this “major” Test match, stating that the entire squad, coaching staff, and support crew are fully aware of the game’s importance. Cunningham also noted the team’s efforts to “build the depth and competition for places in the squad,” with six new caps earning their first taste of Test match rugby during the most recent campaign.
Historically, Spain had been a part of the Six Nations tournament until 2006, and they emerged victorious in the last meeting between the two sides, beating Wales 29-5 in 2019. Most recently, Spain secured a decisive 53-0 win over Sweden, further bolstering their confidence ahead of the crucial face-off.
“Spain have been one of the traditional benchmarks in our game and will travel to Wales full of confidence after their recent performances,” – Ioan Cunningham, Wales head coach
The stage is set for an electrifying clash between these two rugby union powerhouses, with high stakes and national pride on the line.
