Struggling Worcester Warriors Secure Comfortable Victory Over Bath
In a Gallagher Premiership match at Sixways, the struggling Worcester Warriors secure a comfortable 43-27 victory over Bath, scoring six tries in the process. This defeat serves as confirmation that one of England’s most historic rugby clubs, Bath, had hit rock bottom, narrowly avoiding relegation to the Championship that season.
“It was a tough time for everyone at the club and in the city,” Bath’s chief executive, Tarquin McDonald, told Mail Sport. “We had to commit to digging ourselves out of the position we were in. It was clear we weren’t on the right trajectory long before that season ended.”
Bath’s Remarkable Turnaround
Two years on, Bath’s fortunes have taken a remarkable turn. The club confirmed the signing of Johann Van Graan as head coach in 2021-22, a move that had been in the works since 2016. Under Van Graan’s guidance, Bath are now favorites to beat Sale in the weekend’s home play-off, potentially just one step away from the league title.
“The turnaround has been phenomenal,” McDonald added. “Once you start to get momentum, that’s incredibly powerful.”
Van Graan has instilled a new philosophy at Bath, drawing inspiration from the likes of Pep Guardiola. “The beast will always eat you alive unless you are yourself,” the South African coach said, emphasizing the importance of staying true to their identity.
Key Signings and Partnerships
The club’s recruitment has also played a crucial role in their resurgence, with the signings of players like Finn Russell, Thomas du Toit, Ollie Lawrence, Ted Hill, and Alfie Barbeary. Van Graan has also fostered a close relationship with Manchester City, learning from their academy structures.
“We want to create longevity and success year in, year out,” Van Graan said. “We’ve got to dream about making the final because you play in a competition to win it.”
Whether or not Bath secure a trip to Twickenham this weekend, the club is poised to be a force to be reckoned with in both the Premiership and Europe in the coming seasons. With a passionate fan base and the long-awaited redevelopment of the Rec on the horizon, the future looks bright for the historic rugby union club.
