Dame Katherine Grainger to Oversee WRU’s Response to Damning Report
Dame Katherine Grainger, the chair of UK Sport, has been enlisted to help oversee the Welsh Rugby Union’s (WRU) response to a scathing independent review that uncovered a culture of sexism, misogyny, racism, and homophobia within the organization.
The comprehensive report, produced by Dame Anne Rafferty and commissioned by the WRU following a BBC Wales investigation in January 2023, painted a concerning picture of the union’s internal climate. Rafferty has now been appointed to lead a new external oversight group that will monitor the WRU’s progress in implementing the report’s recommended changes.
The WRU has revealed that Grainger, the former Olympic rowing champion, will join Rafferty on this oversight panel. The group will be in place for three years, providing an outside perspective and consulting on the union’s advancement towards the report’s goals.
In a further development, the WRU has published the second of its quarterly progress updates. Chief executive Abi Tierney has indicated that an overarching rugby strategy for the organization is on track to be unveiled by the end of June.
This five-year plan, which has been shaped through consultation across the Welsh rugby landscape, comes as both the men’s and women’s national teams finished bottom of their respective 2024 Six Nations campaigns.
