Seasoned Scrum-Half Danny Care Set to Extend Harlequins Stay, Rebuffing Lucrative Offers from France

In a move that will delight Harlequins supporters, veteran scrum-half Danny Care is poised to sign a new deal with the London club, turning down lucrative offers from French clubs Bayonne and Perpignan. As reported by BBC Rugby Union on April 4, 2024, the 37-year-old England international has opted to see out his decorated career at the Gallagher Premiership side.

Care, who recently retired from international duty after a stellar 16-year career for the England national team, had been the subject of tempting approaches from the French Top 14 clubs. However, the experienced playmaker has chosen to remain at Harlequins, where he has plied his trade since joining from Leeds in 2006.

According to well-placed sources, Perpignan had offered Care a two-year deal worth a reported ยฃ400,000 per year, more than doubling his current salary. Nevertheless, the scrum-half has opted to forgo the lucrative French contract in favor of continuing his long-standing partnership with England fly-half Marcus Smith at the Stoop.

This decision represents a significant coup for Harlequins, who were keen to retain the services of their influential veteran for one more campaign. Care’s decision to stay in London will provide crucial continuity and experience as the club aims to build on their recent successes in the Premiership.

In a further boost, it has been revealed that Care will don the famous Barbarians jersey in a high-profile clash against Fiji at Twickenham on June 22. The match will form part of a captivating double-header, with the former England international set to feature alongside fellow international stars such as Ben Youngs and Zach Mercer.

The decision by Danny Care to commit his future to Harlequins underscores his deep-rooted affection for the club and his desire to finish his illustrious career on a high note. As the London-based side looks to challenge for more silverware, the experienced scrum-half’s presence will be invaluable in guiding the next generation of Quins talent.
