The Welsh rugby union side, the Dragons, have secured the long-term future of one of their key players, Angus O’Brien. The 29-year-old fly-half or full-back has signed a new “multi-year” contract extension, keeping him at Rodney Parade.
O’Brien, who has scored an impressive 352 points in his 89 appearances for the Dragons, has been a crucial part of the team’s setup. However, the player has faced a frustrating 2023-24 season, having missed most of the games due to injury, featuring in only four matches so far.
“Despite the injury setback, the Dragons’ head coach, Dai Flanagan, has expressed his delight at retaining O’Brien’s services, stating that the player’s ‘ability and presence on the field’ have been sorely missed this season.”
Flanagan is confident that O’Brien will make a strong comeback before the end of the current campaign and continue to be a leader within the squad.
O’Brien, a former Wales Under-20 international and Commonwealth Games Sevens representative, initially came through the Dragons’ academy system before leaving for the Scarlets in 2018. He returned to Rodney Parade in 2022 and was named the Dragons’ player of the season at the end of the 2022-23 season.
In his own words, O’Brien acknowledged the challenges he has faced this season, but he is now eager to focus on his recovery and look forward to more games in the coming years. The player is “massively excited” about the future, and he can’t wait to get back on the field in front of the Dragons’ passionate supporters.
This contract extension is a significant boost for the Dragons, as they look to build on their recent performances and challenge for silverware in the BBC Rugby Union League. O’Brien’s experience, leadership, and proven ability to contribute both on and off the field will be invaluable assets as the team seeks to establish itself as a force to be reckoned with in the world of rugby union.
