Dragons Confirm Departure of Nine Players at Season’s End
In a move that will reshape the Dragons squad, the Welsh rugby union team has confirmed the impending departure of at least nine players at the end of the current season. Among the high-profile exits is Argentina scrum-half Gonzalo Bertranou, who had been on loan to Cardiff since April.
Joining Bertranou on the list of departing players are fellow scrum-half Lewis Jones, prop Aki Seiuli, back row Sean Lonsdale, centres Sio Tomkinson and Max Clark, wing Corey Baldwin, and academy player Nathan Evans. The squad will also see the retirement of centre Jack Dixon, who hangs up his boots after this season.
“It’s always a difficult time of any season when players depart, and we thank them all for their commitment and dedication during their time with us.” – Dai Flanagan, Head Coach
Notably, the futures of Wales internationals Leon Brown, Dan Lydiate, and Bradley Roberts remain uncertain, with the trio’s contracts set to expire at the end of the 2023-24 season. Discussions are ongoing regarding their potential stay with the Dragons.
Head coach Dai Flanagan acknowledged the difficulty of this transition period, stating, “It’s always a difficult time of any season when players depart, and we thank them all for their commitment and dedication during their time with us.” He went on to praise the contributions of each departing player and expressed optimism about welcoming them back to Rodney Parade in the future.
The Dragons’ final home game of the season is scheduled against the Stormers on Friday night, followed by away matches against the Ospreys and Scarlets to conclude the campaign.
