England Shake Up Front Row for All Blacks Clash

    Published: July 2, 2024 | Updated: July 2, 2024

England head coach Steve Borthwick has made changes to his starting front row for the first Test against New Zealand, with veteran prop Joe Marler returning and Harlequins youngster Fin Baxter set to make his international debut.

While the rest of the Red Rose lineup remains unchanged from the 52-17 victory over Japan in Tokyo last month, Borthwick has overhauled the front row. Marler, who will earn his 95th cap at the age of 33, replaces Bevan Rodd at loosehead prop, with the Sale player omitted from the matchday 23. At tighthead, Bath’s Will Stuart takes over from the experienced Dan Cole, who moves to the bench.

“The 22-year-old Baxter is primed to earn his first England appearance, having enjoyed a standout season that included a standout performance in Harlequins’ famous Champions Cup win over Bordeaux. Borthwick has described the young prop as a ‘prodigy’ and believes he is deserving of the opportunity.”

Elsewhere, Northampton lock Alex Coles comes in for the banned Charlie Ewels, while Bath’s Ben Spencer has been preferred to Bristol’s Harry Randall as the replacement scrum-half. The uncapped Ollie Sleightholme of Northampton, the Premiership’s top try-scorer this season, has also been included in the matchday squad.

Borthwick has opted to name his team earlier than usual this week, which he believes is a positive sign of confidence and continuity ahead of the daunting task of facing the All Blacks in Dunedin. The England head coach has emphasized the need for mental toughness, tactical discipline, and maintaining composure against the world’s best team.
