England’s Charlie Ewels Opens Up on Sending Off Saga and Fueling Bath’s Premiership Ambitions

England and Bath lock Charlie Ewels may have an unwanted record of two red cards in as many Test matches, but the 29-year-old is far from the menacing enforcer one might expect. In a candid interview, Ewels discussed the reality behind his disciplinary issues, the lonely journey back from England’s summer tour, and his critical role in propelling Bath to their first Premiership title since 1996.

Reflecting on his latest sending-off against Japan, Ewels acknowledged the mistake, stating, “I’ve never stepped onto a rugby pitch with any intention to hurt anybody but I got that one wrong.” However, the lock’s teammates were quick to provide support, with Aled Walters joking about a potential third red card.

Ewels’ offseason was not without its silver linings, as he used the opportunity to learn from the masters of Formula 1 during a trip to the British Grand Prix at Silverstone. Accompanied by Finn Russell, the Bath star gained valuable insights into the meticulous attention to detail that separates the elite from the rest.

The lock’s club has also undergone a transformative journey under the stewardship of head coach Johann van Graan. Ewels highlighted the “little one percenters” that have turned the tide, from a newly built meeting auditorium to tailored nutrition and a renewed focus on player recovery through hot yoga sessions.

Despite a heartbreaking Premiership final loss last season, Ewels is determined to help guide Bath to their first league title in nearly three decades. He believes the squad’s newfound competitiveness and the attention to detail instilled by Van Graan will be crucial in their pursuit of glory.

As Ewels continues to navigate the highs and lows of his international and domestic career, his openness and resilience serve as a testament to the character of this rugby union stalwart.
