England’s Defence Coach Felix Jones Resigns, Leaving Major Backroom Blow
In a significant setback for the England national rugby union team, Felix Jones has announced his resignation as the squad’s defence coach. Jones’ departure comes after the exits of strength and conditioning coach Aled Walters, who has joined Ireland, and fitness specialist Tom Tombleston, dealing a major blow to Steve Borthwick’s coaching staff.
Jones, a two-time Rugby World Cup winner with South Africa, had been tasked with implementing a new blitz defence system for the England team. His expertise and experience were seen as crucial assets as Borthwick aimed to guide England towards long-term success.
The Mail on Sunday reports that Jones was deeply affected by Walters’ decision to leave the RFU, prompting him to follow suit. Additionally, Jones’ personal circumstances, as he resides in Dublin with his young family, are believed to have influenced his choice to step down from the role.
With the 2024/25 season set to commence next month, Borthwick now faces the challenge of finding a suitable replacement for Jones. The loss of such a key member of the coaching staff threatens to undermine the progress England have shown on the pitch in recent times.
Jones’ blitz defence system, which emphasizes a coordinated rush of the defensive line, had begun to yield positive results despite an initial difficult period. Implementing a new defensive strategy will now be a priority for Borthwick and his remaining staff.
The departure of Jones is likely to put him in the frame for potential opportunities, including a potential role with the British & Irish Lions tour to Australia next summer, which will be led by current Ireland head coach Andy Farrell.
Borthwick will now be desperate to retain the services of Kevin Sinfield, who was the England defence coach before Jones’ arrival and had also been considering leaving the setup.
