In the latest episode of the “Soul of Sport” series, BBC’s KEVIN QUIGLEY traveled to Tokyo, Japan, to capture the excitement and drama as England’s national rugby union team kicked off their post-season summer tour with an impressive 52-17 victory over the Brave Blossoms.
The match, played at the impressive Japan National Stadium, saw Steve Borthwick’s England side overcome the challenge posed by former England coach Eddie Jones, who is now in charge of the Japanese national team. Backed by several traveling fans as well as thousands of passionate Japanese supporters, the clash was a true spectacle of attacking rugby.
“With 44,029 spectators in attendance, England proved too strong for the hosts, showcasing their quality and running in seven tries over the course of the 80 minutes. While Japan fought admirably, particularly in the closing stages, England’s clinical performance kickstarted their summer tour in style.”
The reconstruction of the Japan National Stadium, completed in 2019, provided the perfect backdrop for the international clash, with a range of food and drink options available for the enthusiastic crowd. Fans from both sides savored the occasion, capturing memorable moments and engaging with the players, including Saracens legend Maro Itoje, who proved a particular attraction for the supporters.
Although Japan ultimately fell short, there were positives to take for Eddie Jones’ side, and the spirited performance was rewarded with some late tries. For England, the victory was an impressive start to their summer tour, with the likes of Jamie George and Will Stuart catching the eye.
