England Wing Immanuel Feyi-Waboso Balances Rugby and Medical Studies

Rugby Union News: England Wing Tyro Feyi-Waboso Misses Training Camp to Focus on Medical Studies

In a story that highlights the delicate balance between rugby union and academic pursuits, England’s rising wing star Immanuel Feyi-Waboso will not attend the national team’s three-day training camp in York this week. The 21-year-old, who has burst onto the international rugby union scene during this year’s Six Nations, has prioritized his ongoing medical degree at Exeter University over the training session.

Feyi-Waboso, who was born in Cardiff but qualifies for the England national rugby union team through his family ancestry, has had a breakthrough season with his club side Exeter Chiefs. He made his Test debut in England’s round one win over Italy in the Six Nations and scored his first try for the national team in their Calcutta Cup defeat by Scotland last weekend.

“England star Immanuel Feyi-Waboso will not attend their three-day training camp in York,” the report states, noting that England head coach Steve Borthwick is “clearly willing to allow the player to balance his medical studies with his professional rugby career.”

However, as part of his medical degree, the aspiring doctor has a crucial exam this week that must be completed in person. This scheduling conflict is the reason why Feyi-Waboso is not included in the 36-man England rugby union squad that will train in York.

This scenario, where a top rugby union player prioritizes their academic pursuits, is somewhat unusual in the modern game. But it underscores the versatility and commitment of Feyi-Waboso, who is navigating the demands of elite-level rugby union while also pursuing a medical degree.

Despite his absence from the York training camp, there is no suggestion that Feyi-Waboso’s education will prevent him from being considered for selection to face Ireland at Twickenham on March 9th. The England rugby union team will be eager to have their talented young wing available as they seek to bounce back from their disappointing loss to Scotland in the Six Nations.
