Rugby Union News: England Sweat on Genge’s Fitness Ahead of Summer Tour
Bristol director of rugby Pat Lam has expressed concerns over the fitness of England’s loosehead prop Ellis Genge, who suffered a calf injury during his team’s convincing victory over Harlequins. The injury has cast doubt over Genge’s participation in England’s upcoming summer tour matches against Japan and New Zealand.
Genge, who is a vital figure for national head coach Steve Borthwick and an undisputed first-choice at his position when fit, was forced off in the first half of the game. According to Lam, “He popped his calf in the scrum. I don’t know how bad it is. Hopefully for England it’s not as bad as it looks.”
The 29-year-old Genge has been a key player for England, leading the team and serving as vice-captain under Borthwick. His potential absence would be a significant blow for the national side as they prepare to face Japan in Tokyo on June 22 and then take on New Zealand in two Tests on July 6 and 13.
Despite the injury setback, Bristol managed to secure a comfortable victory over Harlequins, with Genge scoring one of their seven tries before being forced off the field. However, the win was not enough to secure a playoff spot for the Bears, as their scintillating performance was ultimately rendered redundant by Sale’s shock victory over Saracens.
Harlequins head coach Danny Wilson acknowledged his team’s struggles, stating, “In the last two weeks, we’ve conceded 53 and 58 points. We’ve scored four tries and not even come close. Fair play to Bristol, they ran everything and we got cut to ribbons.”
As England’s summer tour approaches, the focus will be on the fitness of Ellis Genge, a crucial player for the national side. Steve Borthwick and his coaching staff will be hoping the injury is not as severe as it initially appeared, as they look to prepare their team for the challenging matches against Japan and New Zealand.
