Fearless England Arrive in New Zealand for Two-Test Series
England’s national rugby union team is approaching their upcoming series against the formidable All Blacks with a bold and confident mindset. For the first time in a decade, the Red Rose will take on the mighty Kiwis on their home turf, determined to shed their historic psychological disadvantage.
Gone are the days when English teams would be “psyched out” by New Zealand’s imposing reputation and home dominance. The tide has turned, as evidenced by Ireland’s historic 2-1 series victory over the All Blacks two years ago. England, too, have no recent scars from this box-office rivalry and are intent on casting their opponents as mere mortal rugby players, possessing similar qualities and vulnerabilities.
“The All Blacks are the All Blacks, but they are human as well,” said 21-year-old Exeter wing Immanuel Feyi-Waboso. “As a rugby player, you have to keep them grounded and yourself grounded. Everyone is the same; just good rugby players.”
England’s eight-try, 52-17 rout of Japan last Saturday has further buoyed the squad’s confidence ahead of the two-Test series. Saracens No. 8 Ben Earl, who is relishing the “bucket-list” opportunity, emphasized that the team has taken inspiration from their recent positive results against the Kiwis, including the historic 19-7 victory in the 2019 World Cup semi-final.
Head Coach Fosters Positive Mindset
Head coach Steve Borthwick has fostered an environment where his players are focused on their own performance rather than being intimidated by the opposition’s reputation. Echoing the Kiwi approach, Borthwick wants his squad to be “excited about what we’re trying to do” and to “test themselves against the best.”
