Finn Russell Committed to Scotland’s 2027 World Cup Campaign
Renowned fly-half Finn Russell has emphatically declared his commitment to the Scotland national team, aiming to lead Gregor Townsend’s side through to the 2027 Rugby World Cup in Australia.
The Bath and former Glasgow and Racing 92 playmaker was recently named co-captain of the national team for this year’s Six Nations campaign. This appointment marks a significant turnaround in Russell’s relationship with head coach Townsend, which had been tumultuous in the past, leading to his exclusion from the squad in 2020 and 2022.
“I’ll be 32 in September, and usually my birthday is in the World Cup, so I’ll be turning 35 during the tournament,” said Russell, a TNT Sports ambassador. “I’m definitely planning on making that World Cup. I’ve not got any notion of retiring any time soon. As long as I’m still enjoying it and playing well, there is no point in me stopping.”
Since his Test debut in 2014, Russell has been a key figure for Scotland, representing his country at three World Cups and amassing an impressive 80 caps. The gifted playmaker is widely regarded as one of the world’s best fly-halves.
Russell’s commitment to the national team is a significant boost for Scotland’s chances of success in the coming years. The 31-year-old has recently welcomed his second child, and he is eager to create lasting memories for his family during his international career.
“Having young kids now, I’d love for them to be old enough to remember some of my career,” Russell said. “I’ve got photos of me and my daughter at Murrayfield running around and at Bath, but she won’t remember any of those. In another four or five years, she’ll remember them.”
As the 2024/25 Gallagher Premiership season approaches, Russell will soon be back in action with Bath. His focus will then shift to Scotland’s upcoming autumn campaign, which includes matches against Fiji, South Africa, Portugal, and Australia.
