Anscombe’s Gloucester Move Revitalizes His Career
Fly-half Gareth Anscombe has found a renewed sense of purpose since his move to Gloucester, where he has reunited with his Wales teammate Tomus Williams.
“When I got to Gloucester, it felt like I was meant to be there, and it has been refreshing,” Anscombe said. The most important thing for him is to “play consistently, spend time back on the field, and keep myself together.”
Anscombe has enjoyed linking up with Williams again, their previous partnership at Cardiff now rekindled at Gloucester. “He’s been outstanding for Gloucester, one of our best players recently, and is world class,” Anscombe praised.
With Dan Biggar’s retirement after the World Cup and Anscombe’s own injury struggles, Wales have fielded a younger crop of fly-halves in their recent Tests, including Sam Costelow, Ioan Lloyd, and Ben Thomas. Anscombe is now eyeing a return to the national team, aiming to bring his experience to the side.
“My goal is to try and play for Wales again and help bring some experience to this younger side,” he said. “We’ve got to get a few wins here, and that helps you enjoy what you do.”
Wales have lost all eight of their Tests in 2024 so far, and Anscombe acknowledges the need to recapture the winning habit.
“We haven’t been far away. If we can put in a couple of improved performances that bring wins, suddenly everyone starts relaxing a little bit. Winning is a habit, but so is losing. We just need to understand what it takes to win at this level.”
