Gareth Anscombe’s Wales Return Boosts Squad Ahead of Crucial Fiji Clash

For Dan Biggar, Gareth Anscombe has been a familiar rival in the battle for the coveted Wales fly-half jersey for years. However, their professional and personal relationship has always been one of mutual respect and camaraderie, as they guided the Welsh national team to lofty heights during a golden period.

As Anscombe prepares to make his return to the Wales squad for the first time since the 2023 Rugby World Cup, Biggar reflects on their unique dynamic and the significance of his teammate’s comeback.

“We had a good rivalry, but I think we always did it in the right way,” Anscombe told Biggar, as the two Welsh icons reminisced ahead of a crucial November international window for Warren Gatland’s side.

The two fly-halves acknowledged that the competition for the number 10 shirt could be “awkward at times,” given the dominant nature of their positions. However, they also recognized their different strengths and how Gatland expertly utilized their complementary skills to drive the team forward.

Anscombe’s return will be a major boost for the current Wales squad, as they seek to regain their form and confidence after a challenging period. The 33-year-old admits that it feels “weird” being the “elder statesman” in the team, but he is determined to make the most of his “unfinished business” with the national side.

“Fiji is a must-win. Maybe that pressure is what this group needs,” Anscombe said. “The public is crying out for it. I really don’t think success for Wales is too far away. I’d like to think I can bring a lot to the team so we get that right.”

With Anscombe’s vast experience and Biggar’s continued presence, Wales will hope to rediscover their winning formula as they prepare to face Fiji in a crucial opening fixture of their November campaign.
