GB Sevens Squad Announced for Repechage Tournament
In a significant move, GB head coach Tony Roques has revealed a 12-player squad for the upcoming repechage tournament. This announcement sees the return of experienced players Tom Emery and Alex Davis to the GB Sevens men’s team.
Roques, who took over as the GB Sevens coach for the Tokyo Olympics in 2021, led his side to a bronze-medal match defeat against Argentina. Since the Tokyo Games, GB have faced several challenges, including the retirement of seasoned captain Tom Mitchell and all-time top try-scorer in the World Series, Dan Norton, both of whom stepped away from sevens in 2022.
Amidst these changes, Scotland’s Robbie Fergusson has been named as the captain of the GB squad. The team has struggled to maintain their form over the past two seasons, finishing ninth and eighth in the World Series, following the loss of their experienced Olympians.
However, there have been some bright spots for the GB Sevens team. In March, they reached the final of the Los Angeles tournament, where they were narrowly defeated 21-0 by a French team led by the talismanic Antoine Dupont. This run to the final included victories over repechage opponents Canada, as well as Australia and Spain.
More recently, the reigning World Series champions, France, needed extra-time to overcome GB at the Grand Final in Madrid.
“The men’s sevens tournament at the upcoming Paris Olympics is scheduled to commence on 24 July, with the women’s event starting on 28 July.”
The GB repechage squad is as follows:
- Kaleem Barreto
- Ross McCann
- Harry Glover
- Morgan Williams
- Robbie Fergusson (capt)
- Ethan Waddleton
- Will Homer
- Max McFarland
- Jamie Barden
- Charlton Kerr
- Tom Emery
- Alex Davis
