Rugby Union News: Georgia Thrash England’s U20 Team, Seek Six Nations Inclusion
In a stunning display of their rising talent, Georgia’s U20 rugby union team thrashed the reigning U20 Six Nations champions, England, with a 45-17 victory on Wednesday in Tbilisi. This marked the second time in the last 12 months that the young English side has fallen to the ambitious Lelos.
Georgia Rugby president Soso Tkemaladze was quick to seize the moment, demanding that his nation be included in the prestigious U20 Six Nations competition moving forward.
“This impressive result and highly professional performance shows how strong Georgian rugby’s next generation is,” Tkemaladze stated. “England are the U20 Six Nations champions, and we’ve beaten them for the second year running, so I think our case for inclusion in the competition is now stronger than ever.”
The defeat was undoubtedly a humiliating result for England, who had previously defeated Georgia 31-7 just a week prior. However, the young Georgian side proved they were more than capable of turning the tables on their counterparts. England’s social media feed appeared hesitant to fully acknowledge the extent of the loss, opting to post videos of their own team’s tries without prominently displaying the final score.
Georgia’s Promising Future
Georgia’s senior men’s team is now led by former England hooker Richard Cockerill, and the success of their U20 side suggests a promising future for the nation’s rugby development pathway. While entry into the senior Six Nations may still be a distant prospect, Tkemaladze is adamant that his country deserves more opportunities at the U20 level.
“I am very proud of our boys, not just for today’s performance, but for the progress they have made on and off the pitch. This fantastic generation of players deserves more opportunities,” he said. “I can’t wait to see this side run out in the World Championship next month. I know they will do themselves and the whole country proud.”
