In an attritional BBC rugby union encounter at Kingsholm, Gloucester edged past Ospreys 23-13 to move within 80 minutes of their fifth European Challenge Cup final.
Seb Blake’s try proved the difference as the Cherry and Whites overcame their Welsh visitors in a tight first-half battle. Argentina fly-half Santi Carreras slotted six penalties to secure the victory for the home side, who will now host either Benetton or Connacht in the semi-finals.
The rugby union gameplay saw Ospreys take an early lead through a spectacular try from Keelan Giles, but Gloucester fought back to lead 14-13 at the break. The home side then turned the screw in the second half, with their dominant scrum and breakdown work earning a series of penalties that Carreras duly converted.
“Despite the loss, Ospreys defence coach Mark Jones took pride in his side’s effort, though acknowledged the high penalty count and unforced errors ultimately cost them in this rugby union scores encounter.”
Gloucester director of rugby George Skivington was delighted with his team’s improved defensive display, having focused on that area after their recent Premiership defeat to Bristol. The win sets up a mouthwatering rugby world cup final-esque semi-final at Kingsholm as Gloucester continue their quest for European glory.
