Rugby Union News: Gloucester’s Zach Mercer Mulls Toulon Move in 2025
Gloucester’s star No 8 Zach Mercer is considering a return to France, with Toulon emerging as a potential destination in 2025. Mercer, who left a lucrative contract with Montpellier last season to pursue his England ambitions under Steve Borthwick, has been left out of the national squad for the upcoming tour of Japan and New Zealand.
Mercer’s Exclusion from the England Squad
Despite his impressive form for the Cherry and Whites this season, the 26-year-old has yet to earn an international cap since his last selection by Eddie Jones in 2018. Players based in France are ineligible for England selection, and Mercer’s move home has not materialized as he had hoped, with the likes of Ben Earl, Alex Dombrandt, and Tom Willis preferred ahead of him.
Toulon’s Interest in Mercer
Mercer is committed to his contract at Kingsholm for the upcoming season, but Toulon have already given him a tour of their training facilities and are eager to secure his services in 2025. With three years remaining on his current deal, Gloucester would command a significant transfer fee should Mercer decide to join the French club.
“The No 8 was awarded the prestigious Player of the Year award in the Top 14 last season, helping Montpellier to their first-ever domestic title. Now, he finds himself considering a potential return to France, where he previously enjoyed success before his return to England.”
