Great Britain Men’s Sevens Team Progresses to Quarter-Finals in Monaco Repechage Tournament
Great Britain’s men’s rugby sevens team has advanced to the quarter-finals of the repechage tournament in Monaco, topping their pool as they bid to secure the final qualification spot for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.
The tournament, which concludes on Sunday, represents the last chance for teams to qualify for the Olympic rugby sevens event. Only one of the 11 participating teams will secure a spot in Paris.
Great Britain will face Tonga in the quarter-finals, while South Africa also finished top of their pool and will take on Uganda in the next round.
Tony Roques’ side followed up their opening win over China on Friday with two more victories in their remaining pool games on Saturday. Charlton Kerr scored a hat-trick in the 29-5 victory over Uganda, and two tries from Alex Davis helped secure a 17-12 win against Canada.
The Great Britain men’s team were silver medallists at the Olympic debut of rugby sevens in Rio 2016 and lost the bronze medal match to Argentina at the Tokyo Olympics three years ago.
Meanwhile, the Great Britain women’s team has already secured their place at the Paris 2024 Olympics and announced their 12-player squad for the tournament earlier this week.
