Great Britain Sevens Men’s Team Kicks Off Olympic Qualifiers with Decisive Victory
On 3 June, the Great Britain Sevens men’s team commenced their bid to secure the final place at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, achieving a convincing 35-19 triumph over China at the repechage tournament in Monaco. This event, which concludes on 4 June, represents the last opportunity for teams to qualify for the prestigious international competition.
The match began on a challenging note for GB, as they conceded two early tries and lost key playmaker Tom Emery to a concerning ankle injury. However, Morgan Williams and Kaleem Barreto‘s timely responses saw the team take a 14-12 lead at halftime.
“We knew it was going to be a tough game against China, but the boys dug deep and got the job done,” said GB head coach, James Rodwell.
In the second half, Will Homer‘s brace of tries, along with Charlton Kerr‘s final score, helped GB secure a comfortable victory and maintain their hopes of progressing to the knockout stages on Saturday. They will face Uganda (11:28 BST) and their main Pool B rivals, Canada (16:32), in their remaining group fixtures.
The men’s sevens tournament at the Paris 2024 Olympics is scheduled to commence on 24 July, with the women’s event following on 28 July.
