Ireland Dominant in Commanding Victory over Wales in Women’s Six Nations

Boasting an exhilarating performance, Ireland secured a commanding 36-5 victory over Wales during the 2024 Women’s Six Nations championship at Virgin Media Park in Cork. The triumphant Irish outmatched their opponents in all aspects, ending a seven-game losing streak in the competition.

In stark contrast, Wales endured their sixth consecutive defeat, managing only a solitary point from their opening three matches. Ireland’s bonus-point win, marked by five tries, puts them in a strong position, rising above Italy and Scotland into third place, while Wales remains at the bottom of the table.

    First-Half Dominance

The first half witnessed Ireland’s unyielding dominance, with early tries by Aoife Wafer and Eve Higgins. Aoibheann Reilly initiated the move by breaking through the Welsh defenses, allowing Higgins to crash over from close range. Scrumhalf Jones followed suit, scoring the third try from a rolling maul after Ireland opted for a lineout from a penalty kick.

    Second-Half Onslaught

The determined Irish continued their assault in the second half, scoring additional tries. Teenage wing Katie Corrigan claimed her second international try after charging down Llecu George’s attempted clearance from her own 22 and sprinting over the line. Replacement Beibhinn Parsons later added to Ireland’s tally with a brilliant try down the left line.

“In the 66th minute, Wales finally managed to get on the scoreboard via a Gwennan Hopkins try. Hopkins, making her international debut, burrowed over after the Television Match Official confirmed she had grounded the ball.”

Ian Cunningham’s Welsh team had another try ruled out, but it was too little, too late. Ireland, eager to build on their success, will travel to play championship leaders England, while Wales will host France in a bid to avoid the wooden spoon.
