Rugby Union Icon Kevin Sinfield Mulls England Coaching Extension
Kevin Sinfield, the renowned rugby league figure, is contemplating prolonging his involvement with the England national rugby union team beyond their current summer tour, provided an agreement can be reached with the Rugby Football Union (RFU) regarding the scope of his responsibilities.
Sinfield, who was initially slated to depart following the upcoming Test matches in Japan and New Zealand, has garnered the admiration of the England players and head coach Steve Borthwick, who are keen to retain his services. Initially, Sinfield joined the England setup, alongside Borthwick, to oversee the team’s defense. However, his focus has since shifted to skills and kicking, with the introduction of Felix Jones as the new defense specialist.
Prior to the Six Nations, it was announced that Sinfield would be departing this summer, citing personal reasons. This decision was influenced by Sinfield’s unwavering commitment to fundraising efforts on behalf of his friend and former Leeds Rhinos teammate, Rob Burrow, who tragically passed away earlier this month at the age of 41 after a battle with Motor Neurone Disease.
“Despite the initial plan for Sinfield’s departure, the England players have responded positively to his guidance and support, making his continued presence in the camp a significant factor in the ongoing discussions to establish a new agreement.”
While reports suggest Sinfield may be retained on a part-time consultancy basis, this is believed to be a sticking point in the negotiations. Sinfield is open to the prospect of staying with England, but he believes he needs sufficient time with the squad to make a meaningful impact. Additionally, the RFU is mindful of controlling costs, given the recent appointments of Jones and Kiwi recruit, Andrew Strawbridge.
Sources close to the situation indicate that both parties are hopeful of reaching a successful resolution, but they are still a considerable distance from agreeing on the critical issues of hours and pay. Despite the challenges, the desire of Borthwick and the England players to continue working with Sinfield is expected to motivate the RFU to make every effort to find a mutually satisfactory solution.
