Leigh Halfpenny Set for Super Rugby Debut with Crusaders
Veteran Welsh Fullback to Start Against Queensland Reds
Veteran Welsh fullback Leigh Halfpenny is poised to make his long-awaited Super Rugby debut for the Crusaders when they host the Queensland Reds this Saturday.
The 35-year-old former Wales international had feared his first season in New Zealand might be cut short after suffering a pectoral muscle tear during a pre-season friendly against Munster in February. However, Halfpenny has recovered ahead of schedule and will now start against the Reds in Christchurch.
“Excited to get out there with the boys tomorrow.”

The third highest points-scorer in Welsh rugby history, Halfpenny signed a one-year deal with the defending Super Rugby champions after announcing his retirement from international duty. His return will be a timely boost for the Crusaders, who have managed just two wins from their opening nine matches, as they strive to keep their playoff hopes alive.
Halfpenny’s inclusion sees former Scarlets teammate Johnny McNichol move to the wing for the encounter.
