Ospreys Come Up Short Against Munster in Knockout Clash
In a tightly contested quarter-final matchup, Munster proved too strong for Ospreys, emerging victorious with a 27-14 win at Thomond Park. The four-time champions will now face either Glasgow Warriors or Stormers in the semi-finals as they aim to book their place in the Grand Final.
Ospreys, who had earlier reached the European Challenge Cup’s last eight only to lose at Gloucester, were underdogs going into the game. Tries from Simon Zebo and Niall Scannell in the first half, followed by the reliable boot of Jack Crowley, sealed the win for the home side.
Despite the defeat, Ospreys head coach Toby Booth was proud of his team’s effort.
“The best team won, let’s be honest about it, and they were very difficult,” Booth told S4C’s Y Clwb Rygbi. “We had a few key moments that we probably needed to edge to make scoreboard pressure, make it a bit more nervy for them, but we stuck at it.”
Booth’s side had unexpectedly reached the play-off quarter-finals following a final-day victory over Cardiff and results elsewhere. Their leap from 11th to 8th in the table demonstrated the resilience and determination of the Ospreys squad.
“We spoke about it being better than our experience in the changing room whatever the result post-Gloucester, and it certainly was that because we certainly swung for the fence,” Booth added.
Despite the disappointment of the defeat, Ospreys can take heart from their unexpected run to the knockout stages, showcasing the growth and potential within the squad. As the rugby union season draws to a close, the focus now shifts to the semi-finals, where Munster will look to continue their pursuit of another title.
