Rebuilding Duties and New Opportunities for Newcastle’s Director of Rugby
As Steve Diamond completes the first half of his 150-mile commute from Kingston Park to Manchester, he takes a call regarding his new role as Newcastle’s director of rugby. The seasoned rugby specialist, known as the sport’s “Mr. Fix It,” has taken on the challenge of revitalizing a team that is yet to secure a win in the Premiership this season.
“I’ve been in hotels for 35 years and I don’t think you ever get used to it, but it’s part of the job,” Diamond says, reflecting on his frequent travels between various clubs over the years. Despite the demanding schedule, he remains focused on the task at hand, determined to instill a sense of belief and efficiency within the Newcastle squad.
Inheriting a team in a “bit of a rut,” Diamond acknowledges the need for a comprehensive rebuild. “There was no real sense of belief to be honest โ and that comes from losing every week,” he admits. However, the experienced coach is unfazed, recognizing the opportunity to apply his expertise in working with limited resources.
“The difference between me and the so-called super coaches is that I’ve been working with few resources for 20 years,” Diamond explains. “If you’re a big-name coach in international rugby, you’ve got ultimate resources and ultimate players. It’s a different gravy.”
With a clear vision for the future, Diamond is already implementing changes, including adjusting the players’ training schedules and focusing on the basics. “The guys get three days off a week now,” he reveals. “A lot of things are done in a non-efficient way, so I look at the basics.”
Despite the financial constraints, Diamond is confident in Newcastle’s ability to assemble a competitive squad for the next season. “We’ve got enough resources to recruit and retain a very competitive squad for next season,” he assures. The director of rugby also sees potential in developing the club’s academy, aiming to create a sustainable player pathway.
As the team prepares to face Bristol this Sunday, Diamond remains cautiously optimistic. “Winning will bring a different feeling to the camp,” he says. “A win against Bristol, Sale or Bath, and it will be a good night out on the Toon.”
With his wealth of experience and a clear vision for the club’s future, Steve Diamond is determined to steer Newcastle back to success, one step at a time.
