Ospreys Bolster Roster with Signing of Wales-Qualified Utility Back Ieuan Cornelius
(BBC, 2023) – The Ospreys have secured the services of Ieuan Cornelius, a New Zealander who qualifies to represent the Wales national rugby union team. Cornelius, a utility back, was born in Wellington but spent part of his childhood in Swansea, where his father hails from Morriston.
The majority of the 19-year-old’s playing career was spent in Australia, where he was part of the Queensland Reds setup and most recently played for Bond University. Cornelius was coached by All Blacks legend Rico Gear at the Under-20 level and for the men’s elite sevens.
“Being here, back home with the Ospreys, feels right,” said Cornelius. “I get to train amongst some of the best players in the world. The likes of Jac Morgan, Dewi and Beardy, it’s an awesome experience.”
This signing adds depth and versatility to the Ospreys’ backline, with Cornelius’ ability to play in multiple positions set to be a valuable asset for the team. The young talent’s experience in the Australian rugby system, coupled with his familiarity with the Welsh region, makes him an intriguing addition to the Ospreys’ roster.
