Ospreys Secure Crucial South African Triumph, Boosting URC Play-Off Hopes
Ospreys have given themselves a strong chance of securing a United Rugby Championship (URC) play-off spot after securing a hard-fought bonus-point victory over Stormers in Cape Town on Saturday.
Head coach Toby Booth hailed his side’s resilience and ability to grind out a 27-21 triumph, which leaves them in seventh place in the tightly contested URC table. With just three points separating the teams from fifth to 11th, Booth knows every game is now a “cup final” for his squad.
The impressive win was the second time this season that Ospreys have triumphed in South Africa, following their European Challenge Cup success against the Lions in January. Wing Luke Morgan scored a brace of tries, while hooker Sam Parry and flanker Harri Deaves also crossed the whitewash, with fly-half Jack Walsh adding two conversions and a penalty.
Booth praised his team’s defensive resilience and the standout performances from the likes of Deaves, Morgan Morris, Huw Sutton, James Ratti, Owen Watkin and Nicky Smith. The victory was achieved despite the absence of several key Wales internationals, including Jac Morgan, Dewi Lake, George North and Alex Cuthbert.
“We have talked about every game being a cup final now,” said Booth. “Whether you win or lose, what matters in professional sport is what comes next. On Monday, this game will be ancient history.”
The Ospreys boss was proud of the way his team bounced back from the disappointment of their European exit, showcasing the squad’s resilience and determination. He hopes to have captain Justin Tipuric, as well as Gareth Thomas and Dewi Lake, available for the crucial encounter with the Bulls next weekend.
