Former England Captain Owen Farrell Set for One Last International Hurrah
Former England captain Owen Farrell will make one final international appearance before signing with French giants Racing 92. Farrell, who stepped away from England duty after last year’s World Cup, has agreed to play for a World XV against a France XV in Bilbao on June 22.
The match, which is not an official Test, will see Farrell team up with current Saracens teammates Mako and Billy Vunipola, as well as Fiji’s Semi Radradra and French internationals Maxime Machenaud and Camille Lopez. Former New Zealand head coach Ian Foster will be in charge of the World XV.
“The prospect of playing for the World XV is incredibly exciting,” said Farrell. “This will be the first time I will have played for an invitation team such as the World XV, and joining up with guys you normally line up against for club or country in a less pressurised environment is something I am really looking forward to.”
Farrell initially stepped away from England duty after leading the team to a third-place finish at last year’s World Cup, prioritizing his and his family’s mental health. However, his impending move to Racing 92 has now ended his England career for the foreseeable future.
“My dad played for the World XV in 2006 and combining the history of the World XV with all the players that have represented the team, with what will be a very fun week for me on a personal level, will make the whole experience very special,” Farrell added.
Foster is delighted to welcome a player of Farrell’s caliber to the World XV squad, citing his “ability, leadership and experience” as key assets. Tickets for the match are already on sale, with prices starting at €35 for adults and €17.50 for children under 14.
