Rugby Union News: PWR Clubs Face Challenges with International Stars Absent
The upcoming Premier 15s season will present unique challenges for the nine clubs, as they will have to launch their campaigns without their international stars. This will have a more significant impact on some teams compared to others.
Mandatory Rest Period and World Cup
With the league season concluding in March, the Red Roses players will be granted their mandatory rest period following the 2025 Six Nations tournament. They will then join the England national team camp for the upcoming World Cup in the summer. The completion of the mandatory rest period will allow the PWR clubs to gain quicker access to their England internationals after the World Cup.
Pressure on Players and Staff
PWR managing director Nicky Moore acknowledges that these changes will put “pressure” on the players and staff who continue to navigate the tighter schedule while balancing work and playing commitments.
League Format Changes
Despite the condensed schedule, the league will still feature two reserve weekends, and all nine PWR clubs will have rest weeks built into the calendar.
When asked whether the condensed format could become the standard moving forward, Moore explained that it is “less likely we’d go back to this short season again,” though he added, “never say never.“
Season Final
The season’s final between defending champions Gloucester-Hartpury and Bristol Bears will take place in Exeter on Saturday, 22nd June and will be broadcast live on BBC iPlayer.
