Principality Stadium Celebrates 25 Years of Sporting Excellence
A Quarter-Century of Iconic Moments
On June 26th, 1999, the then-Millennium Stadium officially opened its doors in the heart of the Welsh capital, Cardiff. 25 years on, this iconic sporting venue, now known as the Principality Stadium, has hosted an impressive array of global events, from major rugby union matches to star-studded music concerts.
The stadium’s opening game saw Wales defeat South Africa 29-19, a momentous victory for Graham Henry’s side. Later that year, the stadium was the stage for the 1999 Rugby World Cup final, where Australia overcame France 35-12 to become the first nation to lift the trophy twice.

Over the decades, the Principality has witnessed countless unforgettable moments. Liverpool enjoyed FA Cup glory here in 2001 and 2006, while Wales’ historic 2-1 victory over Italy in a Euro 2004 qualifier is etched in the memory of fans. The stadium has also played host to some of the biggest names in music, from the Rolling Stones to Beyoncé.

From Wales’ Grand Slam triumphs in 2005, 2008 and 2012 to the legendary “Tunnelgate” incident in 2015, the Principality has been the backdrop to many iconic rugby union narratives. More recently, the venue has seen the highs of Wales women’s historic Six Nations win and the lows of the men’s team’s humbling losses to Italy and Georgia.
