Former Wales Flanker Alun Carter Passes Away at 59
The Welsh rugby union community is mourning the loss of former national team flanker Alun Carter, who has passed away at the age of 59. Carter’s illustrious career spanned stints with Pontypool and Newport, and he made his Wales debut against England in 1991, winning two caps that year.
Beyond his playing days, Carter became a respected sports analyst, and spent 12 years as part of the Welsh national team’s management staff. He worked under a succession of coaches, including Kevin Bowring, Graham Henry, Steve Hansen, Mike Ruddock, Scott Johnson, and Gareth Jenkins, contributing to the team’s success at the 1999 Rugby World Cup and the 2005 Grand Slam triumph.
“Alun Carter’s legacy and contributions to the game will be long remembered by those who knew him and followed his distinguished career.”
Carter’s involvement with Welsh rugby extended beyond the national team, as he was later reunited with Ruddock at Worcester, where he served as team manager for five years. He also had a stint as a consultant and director of rugby at his beloved Pontypool club until 2015, before taking on a role as a lecturer in sport performance analysis at Cardiff Metropolitan University.
The Welsh rugby community has lost a true icon, and Alun Carter’s legacy and contributions to the game will be long remembered by those who knew him and followed his distinguished career.
