Prop Steffan Thomas to Join Ospreys from Scarlets in Rugby Union Transfer
In a significant move within the world of Welsh rugby union, prop Steffan Thomas will be leaving Scarlets at the end of the current season to join their rivals, the Ospreys. The 26-year-old, who has earned 51 caps for Scarlets, will be reuniting with his cousin and fellow loose-head, Gareth Thomas, at the Ospreys.
Thomas’s signing will help fill the void left by the departure of Wales prop Nicky Smith, who is set to join Leicester at the conclusion of the season. Additionally, another Scarlets loose-head, Wales prop Wyn Jones, will also be moving on from the Llanelli-based club.
“It’s great to be joining the Ospreys next season,” expressed Thomas. “I know a few of the boys down there, including Gareth, and they’ve all spoken about the positive atmosphere at the club. They’ve got quality, experienced internationals in their set-up, but there are also some promising youngsters coming through which bodes well for the future.”
Ospreys head coach Toby Booth commented on the acquisition, stating:
“Steffan has shown a strong competitive edge with a want to fulfil his potential. We have a strong emphasis on scrum and lineout, and (assistant coach) Duncan Jones will be looking forward to developing him in these areas.”
This high-profile rugby union transfer will see Steffan Thomas, a former Wales Under-20s prop, joining the Ospreys and bolstering their front-row options as they aim to challenge for domestic and European honors in the upcoming seasons.
