Stuart Hogg Set to Come Out of Retirement and Join French Club Montpellier

    Published: 17:56 BST, 19 June 2024 | Updated: 17:56 BST, 19 June 2024

It’s been nearly a year since former Scotland captain Stuart Hogg announced his retirement from rugby union, citing concerns over his physical well-being. However, the decorated full-back’s story has taken an unexpected turn, as the 31-year-old is now set to sign a contract with French club Montpellier for the upcoming season.

Hogg’s decision to return to the sport comes after a tumultuous year marked by personal challenges. Last month, the player appeared in court, pleading not guilty to charges of abusive behavior towards his estranged wife. Hogg has also openly discussed his time in rehabilitation, acknowledging the “darkest of times” he has faced and the need to “take accountability” for his actions.

    Montpellier’s Gamble on Hogg

Despite the off-field difficulties, Montpellier’s billionaire owner, Mohed Altrad, has confirmed the club’s plans to sign Hogg as injury cover for their starting full-back, Anthony Bouthier, who is expected to be sidelined until 2025 due to a serious knee injury.

“Hogg’s return to rugby union is sure to raise eyebrows, as the player himself admitted last year that his ‘body has not been able to do the things I wanted and needed it to do.'”

However, French clubs are known for their stringent medical examinations, suggesting Montpellier is confident in Hogg’s fitness and ability to contribute to their squad.

    A New Chapter for Hogg

The move to Montpellier represents a new chapter for Hogg, who has been linked with a potential return to his native Hawick at the amateur level and a spell with Newcastle Falcons. In his prime, the former Scotland captain was widely regarded as one of the best full-backs in the world, earning over 100 caps for his country and representing the British & Irish Lions on three occasions.

As Hogg embarks on this unexpected comeback, there is hope that the opportunity to return to the sport he loves will provide him with the chance to get his life back on track, both professionally and personally. Montpellier’s decision to sign the experienced player is undoubtedly a gamble, but one that could pay dividends if Hogg can rediscover his previous form and show that he still has more to give to the game of rugby union.
