Suaalii Shines on Wallabies Debut, Hailed as ‘Freak’ and ‘Great’
Joseph-Aukuso Suaalii’s striking Wallabies debut against England at Twickenham has left his teammates in awe, as the 21-year-old code-hopper put on a man-of-the-match display that hinted at his immense potential.
Despite not having played senior club rugby union for five years, the modest Suaalii sounded unfazed by the international cauldron, remarking with a smile: >*”Honestly, I had so much fun out there.”*
His seamless transition was on full display, as he helped create a try, excelled at high-ball challenges, and proved influential with his excellent offloading and solid tackling.
Wallabies flanker Fraser McReight hailed Suaalii’s key role in the dramatic 42-37 victory, noting how the former NRL star’s aerial prowess was crucial in regaining possession for the match-winning try. “He did that very well and we were able to get the ball back,” said McReight, adding that Suaalii’s debut was a “baptism of fire” but that “he was great, did his job, and he’ll learn. And he’ll get better.”
Watched by his parents who had flown in from Australia, the highlight of Suaalii’s tour de force came with a league-style pop pass that sent winger Tom Wright over for the Wallabies’ first try, launching their comeback. “I just soaked up the whole moment of putting the Wallabies jersey on, it was a very special thing for my family and I,” the youngster reflected.
Head coach Joe Schmidt was full of praise for Suaalii’s professionalism and athleticism, suggesting the decision to hand him his debut was rewarded. “Joseph obviously got a few kick-offs back for us – he’s an aerial freak – but at the same time, it was a good learning experience,” said Schmidt, confident that the 21-year-old’s “diligent work ethic” and “the athleticism that he possesses” will see him continue to improve.
