New Elite Domestic Competition Launched in Wales
The Welsh Rugby Union has unveiled a new elite domestic competition, the Super Rygbi Cymru (SRC) trophy, set to launch next season. The 10-team tournament will bridge the gap for players transitioning from academies to the four professional regional teams.
The SRC will feature the following teams:
- Carmarthen Quins
- Swansea
- Ebbw Vale
- Aberavon
- Newport
- Bridgend
- Pontypool
- Llandovery
- RGC
- Cardiff
These teams will play 18 home and away league fixtures during the regular season, followed by play-off rounds and a grand final. The competition will have breaks for the autumn internationals and Six Nations.
Additionally, a separate competition, the Super Rygbi Cymru Cup, will be scheduled during the 2025 Six Nations. A trophy known as the SRC Challenger Shield will also be up for grabs, ensuring each team plays a minimum of 23 fixtures over the course of the season.
“This new structure is designed to provide a seamless pathway for players aspiring to represent the national team and the regional sides.”
The move to align the competition with the professional tier marks a significant shift, as the tournament transitions from the community game in Wales. The SRC is set to kick off on the second weekend of September, with the season concluding between the end of March and mid-May.
This revamped domestic competition aims to strengthen the connection between the grassroots and elite levels of Welsh rugby union.
