BBC Rugby Union: Haka to Take Center Stage as TNT Sports Debuts International Coverage

As the All Blacks prepare to perform their iconic Haka at Twickenham on Saturday, rugby fans can expect an unprecedented level of coverage from newcomer TNT Sports. Making its debut in international rugby, the network is determined to “lift the shutters” and provide viewers with unparalleled access throughout the autumn series.

    Showcasing the Haka

TNT’s executive rugby producer Gari Jenkins emphasized the significance of the Haka, stating, “It’s pure theatre. It’s something people tune in for and there’s no getting away from that.” The network plans to showcase the ceremony front and center, acknowledging the historical moments when opposing teams have advanced on the Haka.

    Technical Prowess

To enhance their coverage, TNT Sports will deploy a staggering 28 cameras at Twickenham, including a spider-cam, two cine-cams, and a 30-foot techno-crane. This unprecedented level of technical prowess will allow them to capture “beautiful images” of the pre-match ritual.

    Driving Viewership

In a bid to drive up viewership, the production team intends to promote their rugby coverage during Premier League shows, leveraging the “fair-weather” audience and enticing them to tune in for the autumn internationals. Pundits such as Kiwis Justin Marshall and Sir John Kirwan will be part of the coverage for the highly anticipated clash between England and the All Blacks.

    Connecting to Domestic League

Beyond the international fixtures, TNT Sports is also focused on using the platform to introduce fans to the Gallagher Premiership. By highlighting the club connections of players like Marcus Smith, the network aims to seamlessly transition viewers from the international stage to the domestic league.

“It’s pure theatre. It’s something people tune in for and there’s no getting away from that.” – Gari Jenkins, TNT Sports executive rugby producer

The article also touched on other rugby news, including Toulon’s interest in signing Ireland star Robbie Henshaw and Cheslin Kolbe’s birthday celebrations with the Springboks. Additionally, it mentioned that England A’s match against Australia next month will be broadcast on Premier Sports, with head coach Steve Borthwick likely in attendance.
