Tonga Back-Row Powerhouse Solomone Funaki Joins Dragons Ahead of New Season

In a significant move for the Dragons rugby union club, it has been announced that Tonga’s formidable back-row player, Solomone Funaki, will be joining the team this summer. The 30-year-old, whose contract details have not been disclosed, will be making the switch from Moana Pasifika in Super Rugby to feature at Rodney Parade.

Funaki, who was part of the Tonga squad at the recent 2023 Rugby World Cup, has already earned 15 caps for his national team. Commenting on the acquisition, Dragons head coach Dai Flanagan expressed his excitement, stating:

“He’s a tough and uncompromising man, someone who always wins collisions, and his ability to play across the back row will mean other players can thrive around him.”

Flanagan further elaborated on Funaki’s reputation, noting:

“I’ve spoken to a number of people who know and have played alongside Solomone, and they have nothing but praise for him as both a person and performer.”

This sentiment undoubtedly reflects the high regard in which the Tongan international is held within the rugby union community.

The addition of Solomone Funaki to the Dragons’ roster is set to bolster the team’s back-row depth and physicality, as they aim to make a strong impact in the upcoming season. Rugby union enthusiasts will eagerly await the opportunity to witness Funaki’s dynamic performances in the iconic red and black jerseys of the Dragons.
