Women’s Six Nations: Wales Edge Dramatic Win Against Italy

In a gripping encounter, the Wales women’s rugby union team narrowly edged past Italy 22-20 in their final Women’s Six Nations fixture. Despite finishing bottom of the table, the Welsh side showed immense grit and determination to secure a hard-fought victory at the Principality Stadium.

Tries from Carys Phillips, Gwenllian Pyrs, and Sisilia Tuipulotu, combined with the accurate kicking of Lleucu George and Robyn Bevan, proved enough to overcome the Italian challenge. The visitors scored through Vittoria Ostuni Minuzzi, Francesca Granzotto, and Emma Stevanin, but ultimately fell short against a resilient Welsh performance.

“Wales asserted their scrum dominance early on, winning a penalty that allowed them to take the lead through Phillips’ try. However, Italy responded swiftly, capitalizing on a lapse in concentration to level the scores. The hosts then regained the advantage through Pyrs’ score, but Italy kept the pressure on, eventually drawing level and then taking the lead through further tries.”

In the closing stages, the drama intensified as Tuipulotu crossed the line to tie the game, and George’s conversion sealed a narrow win for Wales. The victory, in front of a record home crowd of 10,592, provided some consolation for the Welsh side after a challenging campaign.

Head coach Ioan Cunningham was visibly emotional at the final whistle, as his players celebrated on the pitch, determined to end their Six Nations journey on a high note.
