BBC Rugby Union: Thomas Comfortable in Wales’ Midfield Ahead of Australia Clash
In the recent summer series, Wales fly-half Gareth Thomas made his first international start against Australia. Now, the 22-year-old is set to don the number 12 jersey, a position he feels “pretty comfortable” in, thanks to his familiarity with the backline.
“I think I have played with Max (Llewellyn) plenty of times, and then obviously Chicken (Gareth Anscombe) and Tommo (Tomos Williams) are ex-Cardiff players, so that definitely helped the transition a little bit,” Thomas explained.
Meanwhile, the Australian team has undergone a backline reshuffle for their upcoming match against England, including the introduction of their newest superstar, Joseph-Aukuso Suaalii, who impressed on his debut after transferring from rugby league. Reports suggest Suaalii may feature off the bench in Cardiff, with Samu Kerevi returning to the Wallabies’ starting midfield.
Thomas acknowledges Suaalii’s impressive talent, stating, “I have watched a lot of him playing with the Roosters, so I knew a fair bit about him already. He probably showed just what class of athlete he is.”
However, the young Welsh international is confident that his team will have a plan to limit the impact of the former rugby league star, should he take the field on Saturday. “It’s on us to limit his time and space,” Thomas asserted.
